Smelling something funky in your house even after you’ve cleaned? The stenches of everyday life are inevitable and sometimes hard to manage. After all, a lot goes on in your home on an everyday basis. The First General team has some great tips for controlling home odors.
Even after you’ve taken the bag out of the trash can, do you still smell something stinky? It’s important to regularly clean the trash can itself. Food and other items can get stuck between the crevasses in the trash can lid and at the base of the inside of the trash can, causing bacteria or mold to grow. We recommend taking the trash can outside to hose down and then spray thoroughly with disinfectant such as Lysol to kill any lingering mold or bacteria.
When you open the fridge door, do you get hit with a whiff of stink? Refrigerators are full of small nooks and crannies that trap dripped or spilled food. After the drips build up, mold and bacteria tend to grow quickly and cause a pungent odor. We recommend taking all food and drinks out of the fridge and placing them into a cooler. You can then remove the drawers and shelves. This will allow you to spray with Lysol and thoroughly get into all the tight spaces where food remnants can be hiding. Once it’s thoroughly cleaned and your food and drinks are put back in, place a box of baking soda in the fridge to absorb everyday odors.
If you are like most people, your microwave gets used and abused! Using a microwave lid to cover the items you are re-heating is a great way to prevent spills. However, food particles can get trapped in the crevasses of the microwave and cause an unpleasant odor. We recommend using vinegar to thoroughly wipe down the inside of the microwave to kill any bacteria that might be growing in hard to reach places.
Soft Surface Odors
Carpets absorb and trap everyday odors. Carpets are porous surfaces that are made from fibers. Everyday dirt, spilled food or drinks, pet dander and urine, and general moisture come in contact with your carpet and can lead to an unpleasant odor. We recommend having your carpets cleaned professionally once per year. Upholstered furniture such as couches, love seats, and arm chairs are also considered soft surfaces that can absorb and hold odors. Much like carpet, these household items are used hard and rarely get cleaned regularly. Spills, pets, and kids can all contribute to the buildup of odors. It is recommended to have your upholstery cleaned professionally each year to prevent odors.
